CAUTION: This is NOT an academic writing. Logical fallacies DO apply.
When people are cheering up and applauding Google for what it stands for -- western ideologies of freedom and democracy and the courage to challenge the unchallengeable authority--- it is the same company that was put before a U.S. Congress hearing 4 years ago, along with other leading US internet service providers Cisco, Yahoo and Microsoft MSN.
It is pitiful at the most that Google China has officially abandoned its domain as google.cn, yet it is pathetic at the least that netizens are idolizing the very companies that have provided the core technologies that have been used to monitor and cens0r dissidence online. Even though it is not something that these companies should "be proud of", but since it "complied with the Chinese law enforcement", the information that Yahoo provided in 2004 that directly caused the imprisonment of Shi Tao seems to be justifiable.
Yet, when the companies that should represent the "greatest freedom of the human history" have failed miserably in terms of the basic integrity of corporate citizens expected from their own culture, why then, in the very oligarchical nation that these companies have compromised the fundamental principles in, should they be worshiped as if they are the tank man of the 21 century?
